Oriented strand board, or OSB, is a type of engineered wood panel that is used in structural applications. Unlike plywood, which uses long strips of wood that are randomly placed, OSB uses a specific alignment of the wood strands in each layer. This ensures a high degree of strength.
There are a few ways to make a kitchen countertop from osb board. One way is to use osb as the base for a kitchen countertop that is then covered with laminate or wood. This can be done without a lot of expense and it can give you a very nice looking counter.
A second option is to use regular plywood as the base for your countertop. This can also be done without a lot of expense and is a much more traditional and appealing look than using osb board.
How to Build a Countertop from Plywood
First, you’ll need to figure out how wide your countertops will be. That’s going to be determined by how much you want to overhang an edge and the amount of space you have to fill in between the edge of the countertop and your wall. You’ll need to add about 3/4-inch for each of these measurements. Once you’ve measured the surface where you will be installing your countertops, cut a piece of oak plywood to those specifications.
Apply a coat of paint or waterproof sealant to the outside surface of your osb board. This should help prevent moisture from penetrating your osb board and potentially damaging your cabinets or other components.
You should also make sure that the osb board is smooth before you start applying any weather resistant sealant. If it is not, you should sand the board down with 120 grit sandpaper before you apply any sealant.
To make this osb board, you will need to cut out a rectangle that is about 10 inches wide and a few feet long. You should then cut it into strips that are about 1 1/4-inch wide and 8 inches long. Once you have these strips, you can then use a pin nailer to secure the strip to your counter.
How to Apply Glue to an OSB Board
After you have the strips glued to your counter, apply wood glue to both sides of the fascia strip. You should then place the strip on top of your counter and press it into the glue until it is completely dry. Once the glue has completely dried, you can then use a pin nailer and 1 1/4-inch pin nails to secure it in place.
The osb board should now be flush with the top of the fascia strip. If the strip is not flush with the countertop, you can use a utility knife to trim away any excess.
If your countertop is too thin, it can crack or break very easily. This can happen if you’re not careful and it can also be caused by a leaky sink or a plumbing problem that drains water into your cabinet area.
